Some students are puzzled, why they are marked wrong for certain Science questions, when the answer they give is right. This usually occurs when a set of questions is tied to a certain understanding of a theory. A typical question (like the one illustrated below), is subdivided into Part (a) and Part (b). In this particular example, Part (a) tests on application of a theory, while Part (b) tests on knowledge of the theory itself. In such an instance, if Part (a) is answered wrongly, Part (b) will also be marked wrong, regardless if the answer in Part (b) is answered correctly or not.

The reason is because if the student gets Part (a) wrong, it tells the examiner that he/she does not understand the topic at all. As such, even if Part (b) is answered correctly, it simply gives the examiner the impression that the student has probably just memorised the answer by heart, without understanding the theory involved.

P6 Forces. 1. Forces. Going Back A force is a PUSH or a PULL Forces cannot be seen How do we know they exist?. The Effects of a Force It can make a stationary object move It can make a moving object speed up It can change the direction a of a moving object It can slow down a moving object It can stop a moving object It can change the shape of an object.

Different Types of Forces Gravitational force (gravity) Elastic spring force Frictional force (friction) Magnetic force. Gravitational Force Is there a force acting on the ball? Is the force of attraction a push or a pull?

Will an object have any weight if there is no gravitational force acting on it?. Elastic Spring Force What happens to the spring after it is compressed or stretched, then released? Is the rubber band elastic?

Is the modelling clay elastic?. Frictional Force Why did the coin slow down and stop?
